Pat McGillivray shared the new "Welcome to Bethel" promotional video which is viewable at http://www.bethel.k12.or.us/bethelvideo.wmv  He also updated us on the Bethel School Levy campaign. This levy will help maintain the current academic programs, fund a Bethel Enhancement Project (I.e. Hire math specialists in the schools), replace outdated textbooks, and replace all of its 2,000 computers within five years. (The District only has enough money in the current budget to put computers on a 20 year replacement cycle.)  He urged us all to vote yes for this needed school levy.  If anyone is interested in volunteering to help with the campaign, they are urged to contact Pat - mcg3464@hotmail.com or 729-1229.  Volunteers are needed for sign waving, mailings, phone calling, and door to door canvassing.  Also, Pat has lawn signs.  If anyone would like one, contact him and he will bring you one.  Also, he reminded everyone to sign up for B-mail to get updates on current district happenings.

She will add that information to the PTO emails and the PTO website after approval from Dawn Holdt

Bylaws revision was voted on. Approved. New bylaws will be posted online at the Meadow View PTO website

Committee Reports:

Stand for Children - Brooke Cottle

Brooke talked about the cuts that have happened in Bethel recently. She said we can actually do something about this. One of the ways we can help is by educating ourselves about the upcoming election. She shared with us that seventy percent of the education funding comes from the state level. She invited us to carefully educate ourselves about which state legislators to vote for. Anyone who is interested in standing up for state education funding is invited to volunteer. Stand for Children will be doing door to door canvassing and phoning. Contact Brooke for more information to volunteer. Stand for Children also has a website at www.stand.org where you can get more information.

Talked about T-shirt/Sweatshirt costs. She passed around some ideas and those present checked the ones they preferred. Larry Williams said student council could help Dawn pitch it to the student body

Some ideas were discussed about how best to do this including preordering and prepaying. The idea was mentioned to see if we could partner with a tree farm. A parent asked if this is a flooded market. We will talk about this more at our next meeting

Fundraising Chairperson (Donation Coordinator)?

We discussed the need for someone to coordinate how many fundraisers we do and make sure they don't conflict with other school fundraisers (8th grade group, band, student council, etc). Mrs. Hardwick and Mrs. Costello - field trip to Putters and Strike City. Mrs Hardwick will pay for on her own. Mrs Costello will use her allotted field trip funds. Automatically Approved. (All teachers get $10 per child for field trip fees from PTO each year. These do not need approval.)

Mark Zima requested $500 to pay for an assistant coach for the Meadow View Track Program since there are 90 children participating this year. PTO members felt it was important to support physical fitness programs like this especially with the new Bethel Wellness Policy. Approved.

Marilyn Bounds requested $100 -$120 to pay for laminating film. Approved.

Cindy Cash requested $100 to pay for Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. Approved.

Bonnie Roe - $430 to pay for jog-a-thon snacks and prizes. Approved.

Teacher Appreciation

Coordinator: Cindy Cash

Cindy is hard at work with Linda Ryals and LeeAnn Chatwood organizing for this year's teacher appreciation week. She is planning a special luncheon. Volunteers are bringing in Mexican food on May 11th. There is a sign-up sheet at the front desk. She needs volunteers to assist students in filling out power paws for teachers at lunchtime May 1st-5th. Call her at 461-9490.

Jog-a-Thon

Coordinator: Bonnie Roe and Linda Ryals

Volunteer Coordinator: Margaret Hansen

Bonnie Roe is working on the teacher envelopes for the jog-a-thon and the prizes. Linda Ryals is making the jog-a-thon punch tags. Margaret is coordinating volunteers to help at the jog-a-thon.

PTO Information Table

Coordinator: Margaret Hansen

Margaret will make copies of fundraiser information for the PTO table that will be at Parent Teacher Conferences.

Box Tops

Coordinator: Linda Ryals

Bonnie Roe talked about Box Tops and the need to have another Box Top Bingo event before the end of the year. Cindy Cash brought up the idea of a Box Top Carnival. We may do this next year. Margaret will put some info about Box Tops on the PTO table at Parent Teacher Conferences.

Linda Ryals recently sent in 3400 Box Tops (good for $340) and 3911 Campell's Soup Labels (which give us credits for rewards).

PTO Website

Margaret got the PTO Website up and running on the Meadow View School web page. It can be found at http://www.bethel.k12.or.us/html/mvpto.html On that site, parents and staff can read the PTO minutes, PTO Parent News, and PTO bylaws.

Other Items

Margaret Hansen talked about the some items she would like to seek approval for the next school year's PTO calendar. One was Red Ribbon Week which is usually held October 27th-31st Red Ribbon Week. This week is held to raise awareness for a drug-free America. For the days of that week, there could be a wear red day, drug-free pledge banner, red ribbons handed out, etc. We will talk more about calendar items at our next meeting.

Margaret also brought up the idea of the PTO sponsoring a Geography Bee. There is a $50 fee to sign up with National Geographic. The winner may be able to go on to a state competition. From there, they could have the possibility to go to the National competition in Washington DC. Margaret will talk to Nancy McCullum about writing up a detail sheet about this idea to present to teachers at the next staff meeting.

Margaret would like to type up a survey for parents and teachers. The parent survey will include information about which PTO fundraisers they would support, what money spent for, and what PTO events they enjoy. The teacher survey can be presented at the next staff meeting. It would include information about what teachers would most like PTO money spent on and what they would like PTO to do for them. Margaret believes that these surveys could help us focus on what matters most to parents/teachers and it can also provide common goals to work towards.

Amy Cass received the door prize.

Meeting adjourned at 8:00pm

The next PTO Meeting will be May 16th at 6:30pm in Room 24.

Discussion of Fundraising events
It seems that K-4 raises more money than 5-8. Some possible reasons for this are multiple children in the family where all orders and given to the younger child or possibly shared orders so each family has only one order. Also lack of enthusiasm for prizes or type of fundraiser. Some ideas to encourage older students to participate are to make the events more geared to their interest. For example instead of a Jog-A-Thon for 6-8 have a Bowl-A-Thon or Dance-A-Thon. Also have an Art Exhibition to sell students artwork. Wolf PAC will look into these options.
